Updates everywhere where Blogs and Social Networks are concerned :)

Let's cover what's new with MySpace first :)

The MySpace music arena is a bit different in that the Project Playlist music selections widget is no longer allowed on our profiles at MySpace but never to worry :) MySpace has this totally covered complete with tutorial. Just click on the music tab and get set up :)

Your MySpace status and mood have been adjusted and now you can choose which icon goes with which mood, set it yourself :)

Commenting when someone comments you is easier now as you no longer need to visit their page to comment them :)

MySpace is updating their applications all the time and adding new ones as they move along!

The biggest news is the MySpace toolbar!!! Get yours today and read what Tom is saying about what this MySpace toolbar can do for you :)

MySpace also has the feature to create Photo Cubes right from MySpace now :)

Updates at MyYearbook:

You can purchase the Lunch Money currency at MyYearbook :)

No longer need to view profiles to give high fives or view pictures, etc.

Matches are worth $150 now :)

Captchas like at MySpace now to control the Spam problem and voting requests, causes, etc.

With Battles, if you win and own the picture, you get $1000 :)

Blogs and Social Networks Updates!

We wanted to list some of the coolest of updates on the best of Blogs and Social Networks and Internet related sites! Tonights show is going to go into detail on all the updates at our favorite Blogs and Social Networks sites and some other related networking sites :)

Listen into BlogsAndSocialNetworks.info our Updates Show or follow some of the links below:

First is Google :) GMail to be precise! Find out what has been keeping the GMail team busy by following this link:

http://mail.google.com/mail/help/about_whatsnew.html

To access the "what's new" at GMail Labs click the "Labs Tab" in the GMail settings while logged into your GMail account :)

This little blurb is found at the top and I thought it important to print it here as well:

"Gmail Labs: Some crazy experimental stuff."
"Gmail Labs is a testing ground for experimental features that aren't quite ready for primetime. They may change, break or disappear at any time.
If (when) a Labs feature breaks, and you're having trouble loading your inbox, there's an escape hatch. Use http://mail.google.com/mail/?labs=0" Just in case anyone needed it :)

Buttons to Enable or Disable are listed right next to the desired new features (last check there was 42 current lab choices at GMail Labs).

Stevie uncovered the newness at MySpace as she went digging for the cool new features there and we will go into that bag of goodies on the show :)

Utterli.com, a podcasting "shout out" style Blog Social Network, has some great 2009 updates! Utterli has group calling, video processing improvements, an Utterli Desktop Application for Ubuntu.com Amazon Web Services site. Check out more on the show or visit the Utterli Blog.

Trusera.com is a brilliant one of a kind Health Social network that is in need of partners. As far as we see out there on the net, there isn't anything in the way of a competitive site, so investors check this one out :)

YouTube.com has some awesome new updates like the collaborative annotations where you can invite friends to also add speech bubbles, notes, and spotlights to your videos :) Listen into the show for more or follow the link below to the YouTube Blog:

http://www.youtube.com/blog?entry=cfPYFjnzJIk

Link for information on watching YouTube videos with Windows Mobile and Nokia S60 phones.

Zimbio.com is still as cool as ever! The Interactive magazine - wiki - blog and article categorizer - super site! Named as one of the fastest growing sites by Nielsen, Zimbio is rocking the net :) Check out more updates on Zimbio at the company wiki:

http://www.zimbio.com/Zimbio

The biggest updates are a pruning really of some awesome ideas that are taking up a bit more time and space and not as needed as all that at present. Great ideas need to shed to skin along the way sometimes and Zimbio has chosen well:

"2/9/09

Features Removed:

* Covers (embedded cover images will still work, but you can't edit them or create new ones)
* Member Messages (drop an email to support [at] zimbio.com if you have questions for us)
* Linking personal photo services (Flickr, Smugmug, Kodak)
* Linking personal IM services (AIM, Skype, Yahoo)
* Dashboard Favorites and Subscription Packs
* Private Zines
* Zine Recent Contributions RSS Feed
* Zine Badges and Widgets
* Zine OPML support
* Zine About Page (editing functionality moved to Manage Zine page)

No worries with the skimming off the top, the features that Zimbio offers are brilliant and you are indeed missing out if you are not yet signed up with the free to use Zimbio Blog, Article, Wiki Categorization Super Site!

Blogs and Social Networks Move Over MySpace and Facbook

Move over MySpace and Facebook, people are starting to lose the "taste" for the really big Social Networks and want to "Have it Their Way", you know, hold the pickle, a bit more ketchup, but in this case... Lets turn a "Huge Group" from MySpace or Facebook into a Social Network! Instead of visiting a Mass Social Network to find your group, you will either create your own Group Social Network or join an existing one centered around your interest!

Sort of "Reverse Social Networking" but if you give it some thought, it is really the way it was going in the beginning. Take a look at how Forum sites got started, by topic, by a group of like minded individuals, seekers of conversation :)

The Forum would usually cover a broad topic and each conversation or "thread" would then funnel the topic down to a more specific conversation title. Well, thats whats happening and with a Bang at the Blog Social Networks like Ning and Wetpaint!

People are gathering all of their chosen "colored blocks" from the Internet bin and putting them all in a handy sorting tank set up as a Blog Social Network. What am I saying about these bin blocks? Each category or "color" block, sorted out into music, sports, business, photography, art, beach lovers, snowmen, or any topic really is either kept as a large category or narrowed down even further into sub categories. All blue blocks for instance, or all sky blue blocks. Sub categories could include things like a specific band or music style, a type of health and wellness business, a site for marketing or a site for marketing home based businesses, computer software or software specific to learning.

Blog Social Networks or group topic Social Networks are growing by leaps and bounds and are quite on fire these days, where about a year or so ago they were usually smaller sites interactive with existing reality groups, meaning teachers and their students, sports teams, hobbyists in the here and now who get together regularly to meet but needed a site to communicate through when they were apart.

The Wikis at Wetpaint and the Group Social Ning Networks are varied and cover many topics. Over one million Wetpaint Wikis today and growing and many Ning sites as well. Most sites like this have a discussion or forum area, messaging between members, friending capabilities, a personal profile area, community home page, a page to keep you up to date with the sites "Whats New", pretty much the same sorts of set ups as the MySpace and Facebook mega sites.

The drawbacks are minimal at this point, but some of these drawbacks to the "Minor" Social Networks can be devastating. What if the owner of the site suddenly decides to shut it down? Yes, delete it off the Internet. Well, it happens but this leaves you with the choice to then create your own. This particular drawback does not and will not readily happen with the MySpaces and Facebooks of the net.

The "Have It Your Way" Blog Social Networks are cool to join because you are focused upon attendance. For instance, at a "Major" Social Network like MySpace, you are generally on different discussion topics with many different types of friends. Some may be business type friends, some are in the gardening group you belong to, some talk to you about photography, others you met through Twitter or through blogging. So, you are faced with many topics and many people all at the same time instead of talking about only one or two subjects and focusing on the issues. After about an hour or so (maybe less), you may feel a bit scattered with the larger Social Networks.

With the smaller "Have It Your Way" Blog Social Networks, there is a given discussion line. You visit these sites to see whats happening on that particular topic, not scattered through a realm of topical discussion at a "Major" Social Network. Are you planning to visit New York, New York City, or Central Park? Are you going to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida or the Magic Kingdom? A much more narrow spectrum where you can usually find the information you seek quite readily with the Blog Social Networks.

I have found a few very good ones that I will list below:

Blogs and Social Networks Springing Up Like Mushrooms

Holy Cow! When Stevie and I first started reviewing Blogs and Social Networks about 2 years ago, the list was completable but quite daunting. With the speed of new sites popping up weekly, daily, no ... hourly, the list of reviews is completely endless and impossible to secure by a Mother and Daughter team alone. This never ending stream of new sites, updated older ones, and Social Networks up and coming out of the horizon is nothing short of an emerging army.

This weeks show on BlogsandSocialNetworks.info will cover the highlights of the newness, changes and updates of some of the power house sites like MyBlogLog, MySpace, Facebook, and some of the Google Services, along with some news and updates from Wetpaint, Utterz, Twitter helper sites and more.

What Is A Blog Or Social Network Really?

What is a blog or social network really? What are they for? Since the dawn of the information age has come to blossom, the Internet world has blossomed as well.

The connectability and reaching out for new and unique social settings and situations have spawned an influx of interesting and viable resources for information sharing and socialization. The social network scenario has come to a momentous explosion, with every viable type of interest, hobby, business, and group represented. The socialization and searchability of the Internet, (thanks in a major way to Google) has become fun, entertaining, informative, and interactive.

People from every walk of life are exchanging knowledge and information. They are having fun in the process with the different forums for social networking. The games, chats, groups, networks, and topics are limitless.

The definition of a blog is really just an online diary of sorts, a shared journal of whatever the author finds interesting and worthy of sharing. The postings usually sit in chronological order or reverse chronological order. Typically updated daily or weekly, the blog entries reflect a particular topic, the personality of the author, and possibly what they are passionate about.

A blog is a social network in itself, maybe far removed from your contacts more so than a static website oriented toward a group gathering, but still a social network of blogs and bloggers in itself.

Now, a social network includes sometimes a sub set of blogs, hosted on the social network site, blogger groups, and then a variety of other groups, networks, people, topics, graphics, profiles, and fun.

A Social Network is defined as any website that allows multiple users to publish content themselves. The information may be on any subject and seen by potential friends, mates, group members, employers, or employees.

Creation of your profile at various social network sites is your stamp or first contribution to any social network. Exchanging public and private messages, list groups they are connected to, and make friends in a variety of ways. Commenting on others submissions is a great way to interact in the social network world.

The core topics and who the social network draws to its site are key to choosing if that site is for you. Most of the social networks around are free to join and become a member of. This will allow you the freedom to get to know a site and see if it is for you or not. Get connected on the Internet and enjoy.

Blogs and Social Networks Reviews

The explosion of social networks available on the Internet today is quite overwhelming. Which one will suit me? Which one will I enjoy and use and contribute to? These questions and more flood the minds of all Internet users when confronted with the onslaught of choices in the blogs and social networks categories presented for membership.

Most every social network is offered free to become a member, participate in groups and forums, and meet friends and associates. There are status upgrades offered on some sites, but these upgrades are not mandatory to enjoy and offer contributions to the site. You will get a member page to set up a short introduction of yourself, your likes and dislikes and a bit of flare about you.

You decide who gets to view your information from everyone on the net to only a select bunch of friends, you choose how much information is even seen by theses friends if you wish to be anonymous.

Listing the highlights and specialties of each of the social network sites.

The first site in review will be the biggest! MySpace!

Once you have mastered the MySpace environment, you will feel very comfortable exploring the other sites out there. With the 221,000,000 + member sites, the layout choices, music, 43,000,000 + groups, 22 major forum topics with numerous minor topics, multi category classified section, colors, flavors, sights, and sounds, I would call MySpace the New York City of social networks equipped with Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Harlem, and Queens. Each with their own flare for expression, it is all a mix of cultures and preferences with close knit sub-communities linked to the masses.

An eclectic adventure awaits beyond the doors of MySpace, I hope to see you there. If you are new to social web sites, check out my article series on “How To MySpace”, these will get you started.

Have you had a chance to visit Tagged yet?

This is a fun and relatively easy site to get started on. Everything seems to be in “fast mode” here. You quickly choose your profile background, requesting friends is a breeze, write in your journal, add a You Tube video, photos, all the perks of the “big guys” just in speedy mode. You can have fun with your friends and send them “Tags”…they’re it! A great site to make some awesome friends. Put up your mEgo here to add a bit of your artistic side to the mix. Let’s say Tagged is like the Metro in Chicago….. There’s always something happening.

I did a bit of a segway into mEgo there, so I thought we could visit their site next. mEgo is your interactive, portable profile to create and enjoy on sites like Live Journal, FaceBook, MySpace, Xanga, Hi5, Friendswin, Blogger, BlackPlanet, and more. All in One, interactive, and portable, what more could you want in a profile organizer? Change your look with photos, avatars, and animations. I thought we take a walk over to the business district of Wall Street and visit Direct Matches. Welcome to the Internets 24 hour convention. This is a brilliant site where business men and women can meet, network, and create long standing relationships. Time for a visit to music central, Project Playlist. We’ll liken this to Beale Street, Memphis. Get the “Music Buzz”, search for tunes by artist, title, or browse member playlists. Their mission statement conveys a love and passion for the music industry, “Our view is that the more people share their individual passion for music by sharing playlists, the more music will be created, and the more the entire music industry will grow.” Read More… About Project Playlist

Stopping off in Colorado ski country, we come to Twitter. Twitter is a cool little break off the beaten path. A vacation of sorts with findings and followings, word bubbles and blurbs, featured players and a public timeline. I’ve been told that Twitter is even more fun when used through your mobile phone or instant messenging service. Take a glide down the slopes of Twitter and set yours up. Turn it “on” press send and “off” when you sleep.

Giving kudo’s where deserved and bringing up a very close, prominent second place in the blogs and social networks community is Facebook. A Harvard castle of a maze where around every corridor there is a surprise and a new friend. If you’ve ever taken a look at a map of Cambridge, MA., the hub of Harvard sits in the center of spokes and avenues of discovery. Such is the life of Facebook while you poke, smile at, or give gifts to your network. Check events, groups, photos, and the marketplace while discovering a space on the web to get lost and discover yourself.

Having found Meez through Photobucket, I found it fitting to stroll through the paparazzi playhouse of La Dolce Vita along the coast of the Ionian Sea. Photobucket, where 60 million people manage their media, upload videos and photo memories, sharing everywhere from MySpace and e-mail, to Blogger, LiveJournal, and Facebook. Find MySpace icons, popular photos and videos, and other cool and crazy stuff. Enjoy and recreate new visions on Photobucket. Take time to “Digg” someones impressions.

Another segway? Isn’t our journey going smoothly through the travels of blogs and social networks? Time to venture into the information highway of World News that is Atlanta, Georgia. All news, videos, images, and podcasts. To Digg or not to Digg, that is the question here. Come to a Digg Town Hall Meeting, the very first on February 25th, 2008, to get what’s happening. Can you Digg it?

The choices in the blogs and social networks Internet world are indeed numerous. Stay tuned for part three, and the saga continues.

Blogs and Social Networks in general are expanding and growing daily, scratch that, hourly. The amount of people reaching is out for world wide friendship is amazing and exciting.

The first stop in our journey today will be to the video mogul of YouTube. Like the glamour and sparkle of the Las Vegas strip with the culture and information of the Museums, Hoover Dam, and The Grand Canyon, comedy like Ray Romano and Kevin James, shows and magic like Chris Angel and The Blue Man Group, YouTube has it all.
